Wheels within Wheels
Introduction:
WWW is operated by the Volunteer Centre – Bury St Edmunds, as part of its Community Transport on behalf of Suffolk County Council and provides a Door to Door service for wheelchair users, people with disabilities, elderly and people rurally isolated by public transport.
It is operated using a specially adapted vehicle.
The Service:
The Service is operated using volunteer drivers who are trained to MiDAS Standards, each journey is subject to a volunteer driver being available.
As with the Community Car Service, the WWW driver operates single-
handedly.
The WWW service gives preference to wheelchair users.
Users may take fare paying assistants / carers or additional passengers with them.
The Vehicle:
The service uses a car sized Citroen Dispatch Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV). The vehicle has been specially adapted for wheelchair users with lowering suspension, electric front wheelchair restraints and a ramp style floor.
Mobile passengers can enter from either side of the vehicle via sliding doors and if they are mobility impaired they can enter via the rear ramp.
The vehicle will be based in SCC Shire Hall Car Park.
Operation:
The service can operate 7 days a week and is not limited to the local area of Bury St Edmunds. The service can be used for any of the journeys detailed under the “Use” heading.
Use:
Journeys can be made for any of the following purposes:
A. Hospital visits.
B. Shopping / Personal business
C. Visiting relations & Social
D. Day Centres
E. Visits to Dentist, Doctor, Optician
F. Hospital appointments
G. Journey to Public Transport Links.
Journeys:
Journeys are pre-booked, at least 48hrs in advance, and paid for on a mileage basis. The journey can be one way or return.
Costs are detailed in the next section.
A journey is not limited to the Bury St Edmunds area, maps are provided and individual journey directions / maps can be made available.
Cost:
Passengers contribute on a mileage basis that is below the actual cost.
Current mileage costs are:
30p a mile for uses: A, B, C, E, G.
40p a mile for uses: D, F.
Mileage is calculated from “base to base” e.g. from SCC Shire Hall Car Park and return to car park. This cost also applies to one way journeys.
As the passenger(s) pay for all mileage the driver usually waits for the passenger(s), this depends on type of booking, journey etc.
All passenger(s) pay the same mileage charge.
